Adrenal Dysfunction
The adrenal glands are two small glands, each about the size of a large grape. They are situated on top of the kidneys. Their purpose is to help the body cope with stress and help it to survive. And every day, we deal with a wide range of physical and psychological stressors such as raising a family, work demands, relationships issues, inadequate sleep, financial pressures, lack of proper nutrition and emotional distress. When dealing with these stressors, our adrenal glands are designed to produce stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol.
When chronically sustaining high cortisol levels, our adrenal glands eventually become impaired in their ability to respond appropriately. As a result, many of us can begin to experience adrenal fatigue because of our overworked glands.
Here are some common symptoms of adrenal fatigue:
- Fatigue and exhaustion
- Drinking coffee or stimulants in order to get going in the morning.
- Craving foods high in salt and fat
- Tendency to gain weight or inability to lose it, especially around the waist.
- Increased PMS or menopausal symptoms
- Mild depression
- Lack of energy
- Lightheadedness
- Decreased ability to handle stress
- Muscular weakness
- Increased allergies
- Decreased sex drive
