Pediatric and Adolescent Nutrition
Childhood obesity is a health issue that affects more than 30 percent of children and teens. Since 1980 the rate of obese children has more than tripled. A child is defined as “overweight” if their body mass index for their age is greater than the 95th percentile. When a child is greater than the 85th and less then the 95th percentile, they are defined as being at “risk of being overweight.”
Children who are considered obese are 70 percent more likely to continue being obese into adulthood. In addition, they are at greater risk for serious medical issues such as:
- Heart Disease
- High Cholesterol
- High Blood Pressure
- Diabetes
- Asthma
- Psychological impact
Obesity in childhood or adolescence will have social, psychological and emotional consequences. Since our society emphasizes being thin, overweight or obese children are often treated differently. Overweight or obese children may feel isolated and alone, which can negatively affect their self-esteem, self-image and confidence. Perceptions by ones peers in a negative light can be devastating.
